Global Rollout of Toyota’s Solid-State Battery Electric Vehicles Expected Within a Few Years – Times of India

Toyota Motor, a major player in the automotive industry, is set to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) featuring solid-state batteries on a global scale within the next few years, according to an executive announcement made on Thursday at an investment summit in India.
The move aligns with Toyota’s strategic shift, revealed in June, as the company seeks to regain ground lost to competitors like Tesla and Chinese counterparts, including BYD, in the electric vehicle race.Solid-state batteries are anticipated to significantly enhance the driving range of EVs, a pivotal aspect of Toyota’s new focus.
Last year, Toyota and Idemitsu Kosan, an oil refiner, collaborated to develop and mass-produce all-solid-state batteries. The commercialization of these batteries is expected in 2027 and 2028, followed by full-scale mass production.
Vikram Gulati, the India head of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, shared the company’s plans during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, emphasizing the upcoming electric vehicles’ rapid charging capability, offering a range of 1,200 km (750 miles), and a robust life expectancy. The summit, with a focus on attracting investments to boost electric vehicle manufacturing capacity in India, witnessed discussions on the country’s ambitious goal of achieving 30% electric vehicle sales by 2030.
Gulati expressed Toyota’s commitment to adopting sustainable technology options tailored to specific regions, markets, and customer preferences. For the Indian market, he highlighted the potential of flex fuel and ethanol, urging consideration for a carbon-based tax structure to promote technological neutrality and fairness.
The Indian government’s efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources were also acknowledged, with India’s road transport minister setting a target of 10 million annual EV sales in the country by 2030. Toyota’s announcement underscores its dedication to advancing electric mobility and staying at the forefront of the evolving automotive landscape.
