I am a true believer in the KISS Principle. I have been since 1988, when I spent 2 months as a third-year medical student/oral maxillofacial surgery resident on the Anesthesia Service at Vanderbilt. You are probably wondering wondering what this all means, because on the surface, it makes zero sense. However, there is a deeper level…I had graduated from dental school, and I was competent enough to be an oral surgery resident, but to function as an “anesthesiology resident”, no…in that arena, I truly was a third year medical student. But, here I was, in the OR, with a patient at 7am in the morning, working with Dr. Quimby, as my attending physician. OMG. He was mean. The anesthesia residents feared him. It was enough that I had no idea what I was doing, but it was even worse that I was working with him. I was scared to death. I took a deep breath, asked permission to proceed with putting my patient to sleep…I had my anesthesia plan & I was carefully anesthetizing my patient with my OCD array of syringes. The patient, thankfully, was doing well. I had gotten her off to sleep & hadn’t heard him scream at me once. Maybe I was going to survive the day after all? Then, suddenly, Dr. Quimby looked at me, square in the eyes, & said, “Little girl, do you know what the KISS Principle is?”
I said, with zero confidence, “No, Sir, I don’t.”
He replied, “It means, ‘Keep it simple, stupid.” I guess I too many syringes. My OCD ways got the best of me.
Needless to say that day, zero confidence sank to negative confidence, if there is such a thing. But, that conversation made me think…hard. What he said truly made an impression upon me. The KISS Principle has, in many ways, become a mantra for me over the years. Admittedly, I can make things pretty complicated, but suddenly, Dr. Quimby’s grumbling voice pops into my head, “Remember the KISS Principle, Little Girl.” OK, I remember…he’s right…how can I simplify?
Can we apply the KISS Principle to Thanksgiving or #Friendsgiving? Absolutely! I saw #Friendsgiving in a blog from Pinch of Yum this week & instantly loved it…don’t you? So, I am proposing that we hashtag KISS as well…#KISS…love it…
…& apply this principle to Thanksgiving, so we don’t stress ourselves to the point of no return…
…let’s start with table settings…#KISS especially applies here, because it can be overwhelming to cook everything and set the table. Friends, we are not stressing this year…we are going to use what we have & I highly recommend setting the table a day or so ahead of time so there is one less thing to do on Turkey Day. For this table setting, I definitely went with #KISS…the simple bistro plates from One King’s Lane look great with these super cool vintage salad plates that Ashley gave me for Christmas years ago…& I love the versatile white beaded round placemats from Calaisio! I think the placemats really pop against the gorgeous table linen from Carolyn Todd’s, don’t you think? The simple white linen napkins also came from Carolyn Todd’s, & the brass napkin rings are from Oscar de la Renta…that was my splurge a year ago…shhh! The little turkey candleholders came from Williams-Sonoma years ago…so vintage…such a #KISS table!
I also found these salad plates…which can also be dessert plates…on “runover plates”, if your dinner plate gets too full…my parents gave these antique plates to me years ago…I just like the little splash of color…& since I’m a #pink&green girl, I decided to use Napoleon Flatware from Horchow, which comes in an array of colors, as you will see 😉!
OK, now you may give me grief…this may not be totally keeping with #KISS, but since I have the plates, we may as well use them…Chinese Bouquet was the pattern Bert & I chose when we married. I decided to collect the raspberry & green dinner plates…remember #pink&green…& we mixed the plates with Queen Victoria salad plates. Yes, the plates are fancy, but my point is this…use what you have and what you like…don’t let the plates collect dust…use them…those plates are collecting memories with every use…that’s half the fun! Despite the fine china, the table setting is still in keeping with #KISS…simple.
Now, onto my fave find this Thanksgiving season…if you know me at all, you know that I’m a bit of a Williams-Sonoma junkie. I love their stuff. Anyhoo, I was in the store last week buying their Gluten-Free Spiced Pecan Pumpkin Quick Bread Mix, when I saw their Plymouth Dinnerware Collection! OMG. I decided to photograph the collection to share with you, because I think if you are going to invest in a “Thanksgiving plate”, then these are the IT plates to have…& friends, they’re on sale!!! #shopnow
Aren’t these plates fun? I already had the Anna Weatherley orange chargers…available at Carolyn Todd’s…& I think the plates look fantastic together…combined with the Napoleon Yellow & Orange Flatware from Horchow…to me, this is a fun & festive table for #Thanksgiving & #Friendsgiving…the pumpkin centerpiece is a Vietri piece from years past. I really do like the Turkey Dinner & Salad Plates…look at all that detail in the feathers…
…but, I fell in love with the Pumpkin Salad Plate. #trueconfession Ya-Ya Book Club, guess what you’ll be seeing at our annual #Friendsgiving celebration? I really liked the dinner plate as well, but Émilie was right…it was overkill & not in keeping with #KISS. The orange chargers instead will serve as dinner plates, while the salad plate will be used for dessert. Watch for my Thanksgiving menu this weekend…the entire menu will be gluten-free…even the stuffing! Most importantly, the menu will be in keeping with #KISS.
One more thing…let’s say you really want to go super-casual…you are truly hosting a #Friendsgiving & you love the idea of #KISS…then, set up a buffet! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and before I even owned a dining room table, that’s what we did…& it was so much fun! Make sure to serve plenty of wine…
…I love the wine holder from Calaisio for red wine…it keeps the wine organized, and it’s so simple to uncork another bottle when you need it. This would make a great wedding or Holiday gift for a young couple, especially.
Now…onto my nibbles for Thanksgiving…you have to serve something while the big feast is being prepared, or one of two things will happen. One, you will be driven crazy with everyone whining that they’re hungry & dinner is late…or two, you’ll have a revolt on your hands, & someone will raid the fridge…not good when you’ve worked so hard. However, we are going to adhere to #KISS…2 appetizers that are not filling & are simple to prepare…ahead of time! How #KISS is that?
I recently came up with a gluten-free nibble for another blog…Girls’ Game Day Menu coming soon…but I decided that I would share it with you now so you can serve it Thanksgiving Day…Pumpkin Cheesecake Dip served with Sweet Potato Chips…I highly suggest serving Terra® Sweet Potato Chips with the dip. This dip has only 4 ingredients…pumpkin butter, cream cheese, brown sugar & pumpkin pie spice…that’s it. Put everything in a mini food processor & you are set! This stuff is addicting and goes really well with pre-dinner cocktails…
…as does my next nibble, Roasted Five Spice Pumpkin Seeds…all you need is a little butter, honey, Chinese Five Spice Powder & kosher salt. If you want to add a little heat, I recommend buying a bottle of Mike’s Hot Honey…this stuff is insanely good!
Now for a little update…I’ve added a Yum Button to my website! I am also in the process of joining the Yummly™ Community. If you’re not familiar with Yummly, please check out their website by clicking here…it’s fantastic! There you will find a wealth of websites all dealing with…food & cooking! It’s amazing! Yummly is really the “go-to” website to find thousands of recipes, blogs & websites to help you with anything having to do with cooking. It’s a great resource & I think you’ll really like it. If you will, please click on the Yum Button on my posts & pages…that will help me gain more exposure, & ideally, more readers! Thanks!
Well, it’s time to start working on my Gluten-Free Thanksgiving Menu, which will be the ultimate #Friendsgiving event because it will be so #KISS! I promise! In the mean time, have a great day! Cheers!
